Fire Station 2 spends three days under a tent

If you put in impact windows or doors this summer, the state may owe you money. A new refund covers Florida sales tax paid on impact-resistant windows, doors and garage doors. The catch is that it is a refund, not a discount at the register. You keep the receipts and file for it afterward. Your home has to be site-built, carry a homestead exemption, and have a just value of $700,000 or less. An owner can claim one property, and the refund caps at $500. Purchases count from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029, with claims accepted through Sept. 30, 2029.

Yoghurt & Yoga is heading to Coral Gables, and the name is doing exactly what it says. The concept goes by YoYo and pairs frozen yogurt with a wellness angle. Its backers describe it as more than a café, which is the kind of line that only means something once the doors open. Frozen yogurt shops tend to live or die on repeat visits. A yoga hook is at least a specific bet rather than a generic one. Watch for the address and an opening date.

One Coral Gables story traveled unusually far this week. A Florida man refused to sell his parents' home, and the city's largest development rose around it instead. The report says the project erased his view of the sky. The account got picked up as far away as the Times of India, which is not the usual route for a Gables property dispute. Coverage so far is thin on specifics. But the shape of the story is familiar to anyone who has watched a block here change hands. Somebody says no, and the plans simply route around them.

The Mobility Hub is roughly two months from turning into actual construction. Demolition of Parking Garage No. 1 is tentatively set for October. A majority of the Commission has backed the project as the first step toward upgrading downtown parking. If you park downtown, that timeline is the part to write down. A garage leaves the inventory before any replacement goes in. October is still tentative, but it is close enough to plan around. Anyone who counts on Garage No. 1 has about two months to find a second option.

The Parking Advisory Board is asking a blunt question. Is anyone at City Hall listening? At its most recent meeting, the frustration finally boiled over. Members openly questioned whether their volunteer service has any impact at all. For about 18 months, they have criticized city decisions they say encourage overdevelopment and ignore the board's recommendations. That is a long stretch to keep showing up for. Advisory boards are how residents get a formal say short of running for office. When the volunteers start wondering why they bother, everyone who parks here should notice.

Kate Kortum sings at the Community Arts Program on Thursday, Aug. 20. She won the 2025 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, which is a real credential in that world.
